First verification in Shipbuilding industry about 10 million tons of Carbon reduction contribution

Carbon reduction potentials of 22 new SHI ships exceed 10 mn tonnes

SHI said on Thursday its carbon reduction methodology for Scope 3 (all indirect emissions not included in Scope 2) ship operation has been certified by Korean Foundation for Quality for the first time in the shipbuilding industry.

The Scope 3 carbon reduction methodology at the ship operation stage was designed to measure how much the shipbuilder's eco-friendly ships delivered to customers contribute to carbon reduction.

Carbon emissions are on the international scope and a company's greenhouse gas emissions are classified into three scopes. Scope 1 and 2 are mandatory to report, while Scope 3 is voluntary and the most difficult to monitor.

SHI calculated carbon reduction contribution based on the extent to which the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) value of its eco-friendly ships has improved compared to the accepted EEDI value set by the International Maritime Organization.
