Carbon reduction potentials of 22 new SHI ships exceed 10 mn tonnes SHI said on Thursday its carbon reduction methodology for Scope 3 (all indirect emissions not included in Scope 2) ship operation has been certified by Korean Foundation for Quality for the first time in the shipbuilding industry. The Scope 3 carbon reduction methodology at the ship operation stage was designed to measure how much the shipbuilder's eco-friendly ships delivered to customers contribute to carbon reduction. Carbon emissions are on the international scope and a company's greenhouse gas emissions are classified into three scopes. Scope 1 and 2 are mandatory to report, while Scope 3 is voluntary and the most difficult to monitor. SHI calculated carbon reduction contribution based on the extent to which the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) value of its eco-friendly ships has improved compared to the accepted EEDI value set by the International Maritime Organization.
